Lindsay, 19, who was born in Jamaica but brought up in Huddersfield, West Yorks, shunned the local boxing clubs, preferring seedy night-time fighting clubs instead. A former neighbour said: He had a real love for boxing. He was such a quiet man but really enjoyed the thrill of fighting. I think he was attracted to the danger of it all and being able to just batter the hell out of an opponent. He was very well-built and really strong. By day he was a gentle giant but he thrived on being able to let rip in the ring at night. Theres an amateur boxing club in his area but that was too tame for him - he didnt like the safety restrictions. He was into really nasty stuff and you could often see him walking the streets with his head bowed low but sporting a black eye or a thick lip. Lindsay was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Mary McLeod. No father is registered on his birth certificate. Yesterday, it was claimed that Lindsay was tracked by FBI agents when he visited relatives in America. British officials had asked the US to keep tabs on him while he stayed with family in Cleveland in 1994 and 2000. At that time, his mother Mary reportedly lived in the city and has since remarried. During the 2000 visit, the FBI put him under close surveillance. He entered the US despite being on a terrorist watch list, but on his return British intelligence allegedly lost track of him. One official said: He was on the radar, then he was off the radar. As a teenager in Huddersfield, he attended Rawthorpe High School, leaving in 2002. By that time, he was wearing long Muslim robes. Lindsay met his wife Samantha Lewthwaite in Luton where she was studying at university. She had already converted to Islam and had changed her Christian name to Sherafiyah. The pairs extreme views were nurtured in the town before they moved back to Huddersfield. There, Lindsay worked as a carpet-layer but spent his evenings praying, chanting and practising deadly martial arts. He refused to attend the moderate local mosque, where yesterday one member recalled: He was far more extreme and he must have been sucked in by some evil, radical people. By 2002, the couple had returned south, initially living with her mother Elizabeth, who was known as Christine, in Aylesbury, Bucks. But Lindsays obsession with religion and bodybuilding continued. The manager of Aylesburys BodyFlex Gym, where Lindsay would go regularly, recalled: The first time he came in he asked for a lot of supplements to help him build up his muscles quickly. His religious devotion also continued. Aylesburys Tory MP David Liddington said Lindsay attended the local mosque but was not well integrated with the towns Muslims. Mr Liddington said: From my conversations with members of the Muslim community in the town, what Im finding is that, though he did go to the local mosque, hewas not a regular attender and he wasnt seen as an integrated part of the Muslim community there. Ten weeks ago, Lindsay and Samantha rented a £150,000 property in Northern Road, Aylesbury. That address was raided by police on Wednesday night, six days after the London bombings. Police believe Lindsay drove to Luton railway station early the previous Thursday morning to meet up with theith the three other members of the terrorist cell. It also emerged yesterday Lindsay had given career advice to youngsters when he was a 15-year-old at Rawthorpe High School in Huddersfield. He appeared on a council careers website, talking about the benefits of doing work experience with a local firm. Lindsay had spent time at the local councils licensing department, but moaned about having to do too much filing. On the site he also talked about liking the variety of jobs he had been involved in during his work placement. Smiling Lindsay was videoed wearing a hard helmet on a building site and in the office filing away paperwork. Anti-terrorist yesterday raided an Islamic bookshop in Leeds yesterday as the international manhunt for the mastermind behind the bombings continued. Officers smashed open the door of the Iqra bookstore in the Beeston area of the city. They believe the London bombers had links with the store. Another man, Naveed Fiaz, 29, who is still helping police with their inquiries into the attacks, also worked at the shop. It is just 500 yards from the Hamara Youth Access Point, which was raided on Thursday and had been empty for about three months. Police, who removed computer equipment, believe it may have been used as an explosives factory. As the investigation continued it was revealed three of the London bombers - Mohammed Sidique Khan, Hasib Hussain and Shehzad Tanweer - were banned from mosques in Leeds because of their extreme views. A source close to one mosque said: They were being too radical and I think they were supposed to be meeting in other peoples houses. Another elder said: They were kicked out for inappropriate teachings. Razaq Rag, senior lecturer at Leeds Metropolitan University said: I know three mosques in Beeston had banned them. They were in Stratford Street, Hardy Street and Tunstall Road. Meanwhile, worshippers at the Stratford Street mosque, were urged to do more to police their own communities and report any extremist preaching or recruiting. Six hundred people were evacuated during raids at six separate addresses around Alexandra Grove in Leeds. Army experts blew their way into the newly refurbished two-bedroom flat close to the city centre. Traces of acetone peroxide found in the bathroom suggested a significant amount of explosives had been stored there. |
